Many people forget about the Hilo-area beaches. Onekahakaha is a beautiful white sand beach, found further on along Kalanianaole Avenue in Hilo. This beach park features lifeguards, showers, restrooms, and picnic facilities. Onekahakaha is the best family beach in the Hilo area - with a sandy-bottomed swimming area protected from the rough ocean waves. The swimming is good, but should only be attempted in the large, sandy tide pool protected by the lava rocks and breakwater.
Onekahakaha offers a safe swimming area, large shady trees, and grassy areas to sit down, making this beach a perfect place for families with small children and infants. The parking lot is adjacent the beach and the beach is stroller accessible.
